Completed Projects
Geotagged Videos
Geotagging, the process of combining geographical information with media files, is quite common with images nowadays. For videos, however, this trend has not become popular yet. This project presents both techniques for recording those geotagged videos and for displaying them on an interactive map. [more]
Interactive Hyperlinked Videos in Social Networks
The goal of this project is to develop novel interfaces to allow users to interact with hyperlinked videos. A second research question focuses on technical challenges like tracking of hyper objects and simultaneous multi-user interactions.
Media Retargeting
Media retargeting is about the automatic adaptation of images and videos for smartphones and other small handheld multimedia devices."
High Dynamic Range Video
High Dynamic Range (HDR) imaging is a technique to overcome the limitations of traditional Low Dynamic Range (LDR) imaging equipment. While LDR capturing devices often cannot capture a scene's full range of brightness variations, leaving under- or overexposed areas in the image, HDR imaging provides algorithms to produce pictures that preserve detail in the dark and bright regions simultaneously. This set of methods can be extended to create HDR videos in real-time.
MoCA - Movie Content Analysis
Automatic content analysis of audio and video data analysis provides semantic information for indexing and retrieval.
While digital fast-paced action games are played by a broad audience among the whole world, their educational value is uncertain to say the least. The project Word Domination is a step towards combining these highly motivating games with learning content to create an enjoyable serious game. [more]

Automatic lecture recording with a virtual camera team, based on sensors and cinematographic rules.
Applications and network technology for teleteaching.
Distance learners in traditional online exercise and tutoring systems often get stuck with questions for which they need the help of a tutor or colleague. Learning alone can also be frustrating. In our Communication And Tutoring System CATS we have integrated the possibility to dial up a tutor and/or to setup immediate group communication with other distance learners using Internet videoconferencing technology.
Within this project, two eqution-based congestion control protocols were developed. Their aim is to provide congestion control for multicast (TFMCC) and for non-adaptable flows, two areas where TCP congestion control does not work.
In the framework of COST (Cooperation in Scientific and Technical Research) this European project focusses on algorithms and protocols for multicast communication in the Internet.
Our approach for secure multimedia applications is to implement and improve the latest results in highspeed cryptography research and to develop new scalelable security and payment protocols.

The Interactive Home-Learning Project aims at the learning student at home who usually only has a low bandwidth access to the Internet.
In papercrafting, virtual 3D models are unfolded to 2D cutout sheets. Once cut out with scissors and glued together, they resemble the virtual object as paper model. But unfolding is not always trivial or even possible, because self-intersections in the flattened model can emerge which make the assembly infeasible. This software allows to transform 3D models stored as DXF file into a cutout sheet. In contrast to commercial solutions, the application allows to try different optimization strategies which can yield better results in case of complicated objects.
We are still in the process of finding unfolding strategies which perform equally well for all kinds of models. You may use our open source project as a basis to tackle the problem yourself.
E-NEXT is an FP6 Network of Excellence that focuses on Internet protocols and services.
The general objective of E-NEXT is to reinforce European scientific and technological excellence in the networking area through a progressive and lasting integration of research capacities existing in the European Research Area (ERA).
For more information on our E-NEXT activities, check our MANET-pages.
In the ECHO-Project (European Chronicles Online) a software infrastructure is developed to support digital film archives and to provide Web-based access to collections of historical documentary films of great international value.
Development of a multimedia library which provides effective mechanisms for storage and retrieval of different media types.
The aim of FleetNet is to develop technologies for communication between vehicles that will be connected and integreted into the internet via an ad-hoc communication system.

Achievement systems originate from online entertainment systems like Microsoft’s XBox Live or Blizzard’s World of Warcraft. The original intention is to keep track of a user’s deeds in the virtual gaming world and to reward her with records in her profile. The "Reward System" transfers this achievement concept into the real word.
