We will discuss state-of-the art and new compression techniques for digital photos, video and audio. You will learn how lossy compression works, and you will see how the capabilities of human eyes and ears are taken into account in order to reach high compression rates without much visible/audible loss.

Topics to be discussed are

  • PCM (Pulse Code Modulation) for audio, MP3 Audio (A. Bolkart, presentation: April 8, 2014)
  • JPEG, MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 (S. Büchler, presentation: April 29, 2014)
  • MPEG-4 (H.264), HEVC (MPEG-H, H.265), VP8 / VP9 (J. Kübler, presentation: April 29, 2014)
  • MVC (Multiview Video Coding) for 3D video (A. Moch, presentation: May 6, 2014 May 13, 2014)
  • Container formats for audio and video streaming, DASH (Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP), WebM (S. Keller, presentation: May 6, 2014 May 13, 2014)
